Its no point contemplating whether these ppl are genuine or whether we are encouraging these ppl by giving them money. They are disadvantaged. Anyway giving even say upto 100 Rs per day to such ppl is not going put us(overpaid software engineers) in any disadvantage.

Its not the signal, its not the hurry burry, its a natural inhibition that all of us have that makes us comtemplate when we wait in traffic signals. I wud say give the money and then go. What wud you have done if your purse dropped there and the signal is GREEN. You wudn care abt the guy blowing his horn behind you. Bcoz ur purse contains things imp to ur life. Paying the beggar is imp for the beggar's life and not yours. So you have the leverage to not give him money still convince urself that next signal la paathukalam or something. There is a saying "thanakku thanakku na thanakku thanakku dhan" :)

Think abt this ur small contribution is the basis of his life. Re 1 is not going to change anything(I am not trying to hint at ur kanja thanam or trying to mock ur act). Re 5 or Re 10 might make a little difference. Or buying food for someone is defn better than giving money.

But my point is do the small help whenver u get the chance. There is another thing about giving money to the same person. You give 1 Re in the morning and the next day the same person(You might know whom we talk abt) comes we think that nethu dhanae we gave him a rupee. Think abt the value of a rupee today. We should be ashamed of our ever-calculative mind.

Adhaan machi, couple of things:

Chinna pasanga pitchai keppangala.. Do you think whatever we give them goes to their pocket. Andha 10 rs, 40 rs oda serndhu appanoda Old Monk ukku thaan Use Aagum.

And ya, indha Re 1 vishayathula ennayave kuri vechu irukka. Naan generally pathadha vechu solren. Not just me(Yes, I also fall in this category), Most ppl do this. Almost everyone i see does this.

Chinna pasangalukku money potta appa kudikkiraru nu solra. andha paiyyan anikku 40 rs eduthuttu pola naa enna pannuvaru? adikka poraaru. Again point is they are disadvantaged.

Nee oru indhiya prajai avan oru indhiya prajai...on kitta velai irukku nee kudukkara...avan kitta velai illa avan kekkran.

Abuse of the money you give can happen anywhere in this case u might save the kid from some trouble indirectly.

My 2 cents. The way I look it - 2 questions/ perspectives:

a. should we bother at all?
b. if we do, to what extent?

All of us will have different answers/ takes on these 2.

a. Varies from 'I don't give a rat's ass about these guys' to 'Shit! I need to do something about this seriously. Let me see what I can'

b. Varies from 'is the claim genuine, what if there's a drunkard father behind?' to '1 rupee' to 'a meal' to 'a piece of clothing' to 'a kind word/ enquiry or two' to 'visiting his place to know more about the "claims"' to 'making your life a means to giving them a better life'

And the very reason for such a variety of takes/ approaches is the varied upbringing, thought process, social sensitivity, time on hand etc. in every person's actions.

So I guess there is no 'one solution fits all categories' inga.. And by the same token, we can't judge other's reactions or compare ours with theirs and so on... Just wouldn't make sense.

All said and done, we do what makes us happy. If its 'asking the beggar to fuck off (mind voice'la at least)' or 'feeling bad for a moment while we are there only to lose it in our well-so documented attention spans' or '1 rupee' etc.

PS: And you guys might want to read a little about Jacqueline Novogratz. And the story behind her 'blue sweater'
